Surgical Management of Laryngeal Paralysis

Overview:

This highly practical one-day course will focus on the surgical management of laryngeal paralysis in the dog and cat. The course will be very practical in nature and will take place in the wet lab of the centre. All surgical procedures will be demonstrated before delegates are given the opportunity to perform each procedure for themselves. Where appropriate the course will also include a number of explanatory seminars/tutorials.

Topics to be covered:

 Diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis

  • Surgical anatomy of the larynx
  • Surgical management of idiopathic laryngeal paralysis
  • Comparison of the disease and its management between the dog and cat

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course delegates should have an understanding of:

  • Surgical principles in the management of idiopathic laryngeal paralysis
  • The appropriate use of surgical procedures in the management of laryngeal disease in the dog and cat
  • Hands-on practical experience of arytenoid lateralisation (tieback)
  • Outcomes, risks, complications - and their management - associated with each surgical procedure

Required delegate attributes:

Delegates should have significant surgical experience and possess a thorough working knowledge of the condition of laryngeal paralysis in the dog. The course would also be very applicable to veterinary surgeons undertaking a surgical internship or residency.
