Introduction to how human factors can help improve veterinary team performance, patient outcomes and practice culture.

The course is suitable for people who are unaware of human factors or for those who have a basic awareness of human factors but want to know how they can practically apply it to their practice/veterinary teams.

Learning Objectives: 

 

       Understand how greater human factors awareness in veterinary practice can improve team performance, patient safety and clinical outcomes.

       Understand how to use checklists and protocols correctly and appreciate their importance.

       Explain how clinical audits can be used to improve patient safety and quality of care.

       Be able to carry out a clinical audit.

       Appreciate the importance of reporting errors and near misses and know how to do this in veterinary practice.

       Understand the negative effects of a blame culture in veterinary practice and how to create an alternative ‘just culture’.

       Be able to participate in or lead an appropriate team debrief after a negative event or near miss.
