This one-day course will provide colleagues in general practice with an up-to-date review of how to approach and manage patients presenting with diabetes mellitus, with consideration being given to both canine and feline patients.  This course will use case examples and a problem-orientated medicine approach to address:

·         The different types of diabetes mellitus encountered in veterinary practice and their causal aetiologies

·         The medical and dietary management options currently available and how to choose the correct option for each patient

·         A glimpse into treatment options that are currently in clinical trial and may become available in the near future

·         How to approach, investigate and manage patients that just don’t seem to respond to treatment or remain stable

Course Description

Learning objectives:

1.    Understanding the importance of, and improving the delegates ability to recognise, the different forms of diabetes mellitus we see in small animal practice

2.    Improving delegates ability to create accurate differential diagnosis lists and then using problem-orientated medicine to narrow these down to reach a diagnosis

3.    Improving/updating delegates knowledge of the treatment of both canine and feline diabetes mellitus

4.    Improving delegates confidence and ability to approach patients who are unstable or fail to respond to treatment

The course will be undertaken in an as interactive a manner as possible using real-life case examples as discussion points and problem-solving exercises, so delegates need to come prepared to get involved in the discussion and bring their experience, enthusiasm and their own case stories with them – there will be no such thing as a silly question!
