Sustainable Chemistry - Extra Person

An online course offering the background theory and practical application to Green and Sustainable chemistry, using topical case studies to contextualise learning.

Course Description

A sustainable chemistry course led by Professors Martyn Poliakoff with Mike George, covering the following topics:

Topic 1 – Introduction to Green Chemistry (8 h)
This topic introduces green chemistry, explains how it can be assessed and measured and provides some guidelines for ensuring that chemical processes are conducted in as green a manner as possible.


Topic 2 – Sustainable Chemistry (10 h)
This topic introduces the concept of sustainability in relation to chemical processes. This will be discussed in the context of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how the application of green chemistry can contribute towards achieving them.


Topic 3 – Sustainability – Beyond Green Chemistry (14 h)
This topic takes a broader look at sustainability and how the 17 Sustainable Development Goals can be achieved. This will include discussion of the contribution that green engineering can make, the importance of toxicology and development of circular economies. Finally, systems thinking will be discussed as a holistic approach to analysing larger networks of process and economies.
