Using an MRI scan of Professor Matthew Brookes brain this crystal sculpture is anatomically accurate. This pial surface is known as grey matter.

 

Detailed Description

Within the crystal, the intricate outline of the brain’s cortical surface is revealed in stunning detail. This structure has been carefully reconstructed in 3D from an MRI scan acquired using a powerful 3 Tesla scanner—around 60,000 times stronger than the Earth’s magnetic field. By enhancing the contrast between grey and white matter, the scan allows the cortex (the brain’s outer layer) to be precisely mapped and brought to life in this unique piece.
