Description

Using an MRI scan of Professor Matthew Brookes brain this crystal sculpture is anatomically accurate. This pial surface is known as grey matter.

 

Detailed Description

In the crystal, we show the outline of the cortical sheet, which has been reconstructed from an MRI scan. The MRI scan used to create the crystal was acquired using a 3 Tesla MRI scanner; the magnetic field inside this scanner is 60,000 times stronger than the Earths field. The scan optimised grey/white matter contrast. This allowed the brain to be segmented and the cortex reconstructed in 3D.
