The exploratory laparotomy is an operation that is performed commonly in veterinary practice, yet it still fills many practitioners with dread.  What do you do if you can't find anything wrong? How do you take effective organ biopsies? How do you perform a successful gastrotomy, enterotomy, enterectomy or urinary cystotomy?  Lectures and video presentations will be used to provide top tips, building confidence so that you can perform safe and successful exploratory surgeries with conviction in the future.

• Overview of normal surgical abdominal anatomy in the dog and cat 
• Practical tips and tricks for performing a successful exploratory coeliotomy 
• Video clips will be used to demonstrate biopsy techniques for the major abdomen organs 
• Common surgical procedures such as gastrotomy, enterotomy and enterectomy 

Learning objectives

• Understand abdominal anatomy and its influence on surgery of the abdomen organs 
• Confidentially obtain surgical biopsies from the stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, mesenteric lymph nodes, prostate, urinary bladder and kidney 
• Understand and feel confident in performing surgery of the stomach, small intestines and urinary bladder
